A cat stands very still, slyly glancing at the tip of its tail, where a hopeful fish has come for a nibble. On the tip of its tail grows a bit of tasty-looking vegetation. Its orange body has seaweed shaped patterns. From the top of the kitties head, branching flowers of green and orange blossom and sway, enticing the unwary to come closer. The Nevada State Fish is Oncorhynchus henshawi henshawi (Lahontan cutthroat trout). It was once an important food source for the Paiute and Washoe tribes of Nevada and California. The fish evolved in the large endorheic Pleistocene Lake Lahonton that covered a portion of northeastern California and most of northwestern Nevada.
