Daises/Sedmikrásky (1966)
If the entire world is bad, why shouldn’t we be? Adopting this insolent attitude as their guiding philosophy, a pair of hedonistic young women (Ivana Karbanová and Jitka Cerhová), both named Marie, embark on a gleefully debauched odyssey of gluttony, giddy destruction, and antipatriarchal resistance, in which nothing is safe from their nihilistic pursuit of pleasure. But what happens when the fun is over? Matching her anarchic message with an equally radical aesthetic, director Věra Chytilová, with the close collaboration of cinematographer Jaroslav Kučera, unleashes an optical storm of fluctuating film stocks, kaleidoscopic montages, cartoonish stop-motion cutouts, and surreal costumes designed by Ester Krumbachová, who also cowrote the script. The result is Daisies, the most defiant provocation of the Czechoslovak New Wave, an exuberant call to rebellion aimed squarely at those who uphold authoritarian oppression in any form.

Today in Labor History March 31, 1809: Nikolai Gogol, the Russian-Ukrainian novelist, was born. Gogol was one of the first authors to use surrealism and absurdism (see “The Nose,” “The Overcoat,” and “Nevsky Prospekt.”) Many of his works satirized Russian political corruption, like “Dead Souls,” and the “Government Inspector.” He influenced several generations of writers, including Dostoevsky, Bulgakov, Nabakov, Kafka and Flannery O’Connor. The gypsy punk band, Gogol Bordello, took their name from him.

Obwohl es „Meerschweinchen“ heißt, fühlt sich dieses Tierchen am Strand am wohlsten. Dort sucht es nach Muscheln und Perlen und ist einfach nur glücklich! Die Wissenschaft vermochte noch nicht zu bestimmen, ob Meerschweinchen Säuger oder Fische sind.

Light was good today so I worked more on this piece. I'm about 11 hours into this piece. I need now to stare at it for a few days (the weekend) to plan my next moves.

Salish Sea Sunrise - 8th session. My brushes and paints finally arrived late this afternoon. While I still had some light I worked another hour, bringing this project to ten hours.
Now comes staring at the water and the clouds to paint little tiny details until I either go cross-eyed or get a migraine.

on the mezzanine level of the
Königsplatz subway station, says the website ofbthe Lenbachhaus. Only a week left of the exhibition "Aber hier leben? Nein danke. Surrealismus + Antifaschismus", in english: "But Live Here?
