Biologists witness first case of a #shark intentionally making sounds phys.org/news/2025-03-biologis

Evidence of active sound production by a shark: Carolin Nieder et al. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

"the clicks are made by the #sharks rubbing their teeth together. Such clicking sounds could serve as a means to momentarily confuse predators, such as fur seals... it is unlikely the sounds are calls for help from others of their kind, as most of the frequencies were higher than the range of shark hearing."

Fossil Research Identifies New 340 million years old #Shark Species at Mammoth Cave National Park home.nps.gov/maca/learn/news/f paper: doi.org/10.1017/jpa.2024.40

"Nick-named Chipmunk #sharks for their small size and chisel-like front teeth and crushing back teeth, members of the Obruchevodidae were between 3-4 inches in length. Their small size allowed them to avoid larger predators as they foraged on crustaceans, worms, and small brachiopods found along the sea floor"

Undersea mountains are key hubs for sharks phys.org/news/2025-02-undersea paper: journals.plos.org/plosbiology/

"#Zooplankton were twice as common at shallow #seamounts than in the open ocean, while #shark biomass was 41 times higher... #FilterFeeders may benefit from prey being blown over the peak, and the peak may also stop prey species from retreating into deeper water... Also, some predators appear to use seamounts as hubs to gather, socialize, mate or rest"

Watch A #SleeperShark Appear Out Of The Gloom And Chow Down On A #DeepSea Camera
Little is known about these large deep-sea #sharks and it is rare to see a full adult.
#Pacific sleeper #sharks (Somniosus pacificus) are thought to be fairly widespread and live at depths of around 2,000m (1.2 miles). Adult females can reach lengths of around 3.7-4.3m (12.1 -14.1ft) but there is some suggestion that the maximum length for this species could be 7 meters (23 feet) long.

I took this image of a female Tiger shark last year, in october at 80 miles to Bimini. This image went with my film "Face To Face: Overcoming Fear With Sharks" I love sharks, all the sharks.

Sharks are the super-predators of the oceans and the terror of the Western world. They are often perceived as bloodthirsty killers. This fear is heightened every time a shark attack hits the headlines. In response, beaches around the world are closed, nets are set up and sharks are systematically slaughtered. Living with sharks seems incompatible with our new lifestyles.
Yet one country has made a radically different choice: the Bahamas. This paradise archipelago, which welcomes nearly 7 million visitors every year, has declared́ its waters "shark sanctuaries". How do locals and tourists manage to live with these large predators? Would it be possible to get close to those considered to be man-eaters?
To answer this question, photographer Rodolphe Guignard takes us to the heart of shark territory. Accompanied by experts and scientists, he dives right up close to the sharks to capture some surprising interactions. An intense face-to-face encounter that reveals the true face of sharks, the opposite of their sad reputation
