A few months ago, I made this bag as a X-mas present for a family member.

The lush green cotton velvet is reclaimed from a dumpster dived throw pillow case. For the lining, I used black cotton I had lying around.

I added a thrifted necklace from wooden beads and a cute little heart charm.

I don't think enough attention is paid to the humble leather handle.
These handles take many steps and much time to complete but will last generations. Two handles are cut, along with four pieces of stiff leather filler. The hardware is riveted onto the handles. The filler pieces are glued over these rivets on either sides of the handles. The filler pieces are trimmed, top and bottom to even them out and round the tops. A rectangular piece of leather is "cased" (dampened with water), formed around each handle and stretched to accommodate the curves. These are clamped and allowed to dry. The handles are dyed to coordinate with the case they being fastened to, stitching holes are punched and then the covering is stitched on with contrasting waxed thread. The raw edge, along the top, is trimmed, sanded even and smooth and then edge finished to seal and refine. #LeatherCraft #handles #HandMade #Bags #Cases
Six pieces of vegetable tanned leather, grain side up. They are shaped like horseshoes with the tips cut off. Two have longer ends that have been folded back onto themselves to hold brass "D" rings. These are riveted into place with the round end of the "D" inside the fold.
The same pieces of leather however the pieces without the hardware are glued onto each side of the pieces with the hardware. This makes two handles with a piece of filler leather on each side of each handle, three pieces of leather each. The ends are clamped into place with green and black spring clamps whilst the glue dries.
Two handles with a thin rectangular piece of vegetable tanned leather beside them. One handle has had leather wrapped around it and this leather is held in place with small, clear spring clamps. The other handle does not have a wrapping but shows signs of having been trimmed to round its shape. It should be understood by the composition of the photo that the rectangular piece of leather will be wound around the handle that has not yet been wrapped.
Two handles, one with ends facing up and one with ends facing down, that have had their wrapping stitched onto them and have been dyed mahogany brown.

So. I swear to all the gods that this bag was not nearly so topical when I started working on it, but: here we are. Again. Still. We never stopped being here, but the here-ness of it is once again a full swarm of voracious locusts, and we are in it fully.

I am doing distinctly Not Great With Everything for all the reasons one might expect, but I could do worse than channeling it into making beautiful practical things so that's what I'm doing.

Ursula K. Le Guin speaks my mind: "I am an aging, angry woman laying mightily about me with my handbag, fighting hoodlums off. However I don't, nor does anybody else, consider myself heroic for doing so. It's just one of those damned things you have to do in order to be able to go on gathering wild oats and telling stories."

Hey folks, as our fearless server admin and weekend posting friend @knizer noted, I’m going to be selling my handmade bags and other goods TODAY 10/20 at Somer Streets Monster Mash. This is one of my very favorite of the Somerville street festivals and one of my all-time favorite memories is going there with my wee friend T in his wee rainbow dinosaur costume that I made for him because he wanted to be a rainbow dinosaur for Halloween and his mom was like “….i have no clue where to even start” and I was like “OH FRIEND PLEASE LET ME TAKE THIS ONE.”

The rainbow dinosaurs continue to show up in various of my handmade items, so come check it out! I’ll have some spooky cutlery kits (so you’re never without a straw again!) and emergency treat bags and other witchy wares. It’ll be fun. And you can see @knizer do his best lizard impression.
