#Microsoft is removing the possibility to use a local account with #Windows.
blogs.windows.com/windows-insi

"We’re removing the bypassnro.cmd script from the build to enhance security and user experience of Windows 11."

Oh, okay, but how does it improve security or user experience?

"This change ensures that all users exit setup with internet connectivity and a Microsoft Account."

Ah, so it does not improve security or user experience. It in fact is making the user experience worse, as you no longer can set up Windows offline easily.

The only reason is to force more users to sign up to Microsoft account.

Windows Insider Blog · Announcing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26200.5516 (Dev Channel)Hello Windows Insiders, today we are releasing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26200.5516 (KB5054687) to the Dev Channel. REMINDER: Starting with

Imagine if a product's user messages were honest....

"This release, that you will eventually have no choice but to install, contains a shiny looking new thing that you certainly won't use but is designed to distract you from the removal of two rather popular interoperability features. The new install size is still much larger because we fired the lead developer who was standing in the way of us bloating the code with humongous and brittle third party libraries"

"We messed up (again!) and the software we supplied for you has a pretty crazy security vulnerability that puts your personal data at rush. This is due to its unnecessary over-complexity and our desperate need to rush things to market as quickly as possible"

"Congratulations on being part of our success. We now enjoy a large enough market share to begin "the squeeze". Customers looking to postpone (temporarily) the imminent and continuing service deterioration are requested to join our premium tier"

#publishingwide #Selfpublishing #Amazon #ChokepointCapitalism #Enshittification

People talk about the #enshittification of the internet as a novelty, but in fact all communication technologies of the 20th century, telegraph, telephone, radio, television started with utopic promises for a "better world" but quickly degenerated.

Searching for a mode of communication that has managed to resist that dynamic takes us back to a profound invention that survives against all odds: the printed book.

What was so resilient about it and can it be replicated in the digital era?

So my Kia has an OTA updatable media/navigation system. Last year Kia decided that they could make some money on it, now they've finally introduced pricing: 100 EUR per year, so per 2 updates.

Last year's updates:
- enable OTA updates
- add new sounds of nature

ORLY? That's what you want to charge 100 EUR for? For an trivial update to an unusable navigation system, which has one main redeeming quality: it provides a decent hardware to run Android Auto on.

Oh and also the updates can be applied (freely, officially) from a USB drive.

@kristiedegaris Thank you so much for sharing your story on the unpaid labour of book authors.

I first learned about this through the 2022 book "Chokepoint Capitalism" by @pluralistic which describes in detail how publishers (and other intermediaries) systematically exploit creative workers:

The system is in an advanced stage of #enshittification, and things must change.
