To be clear, my optimism didn't really last all that long, say from about 1995 when the #WWW really took off, to 1998 or so when the #dotcom bubble started to crack. By 1999 it was obvious things weren't working out so well: The #Matrix hit at exactly the right moment.
But oh, how I miss that brief period when it looked like we were going to get #StarTrek instead.
Sometimes I'll abandon looking at a website due to the annoyingly large amount of domains that I'm required to unblock in NoScript to simply view the content.

That's a good question, the answer is rather a lot https://hamishcampbell.com/?s=history if you look back this is a light touch on the 30 years of work, started on the Sinclair spectrum as part of a development team on games and applications, was one of the first wave of users of the #WWW when it arrived at the computer centre in Oxford, have been working at the core of grassroots #openweb activism for the last 20 years on meany projects that worked and meany that did not.
Ten years ago I bought a lifeboat and sailed away, but the world is round and now am back, yes it's a mess.
It's good to ask these questions sometimes.

The World Wide Web is over 30 years old. And still you come across web sites where "www.website.com" works, but "website.com" gives an error message.
"On August 6, 1991 [33 years ago], the first website was introduced to the world. [It] contained information about the World Wide Web Project. It launched at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN, where it was created by British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee."
