@osman If your #OpSec, #InfoSec, #ComSec and/or #ITsec relies on @signalapp and/or @Mer__edith risking jail or worse, you fucked up!

Seriously, to me #Signal stenches #Honeypot like #ANØM & #CryptoAG.

That's why I get people setup with it!

@ckrypto if@signalapp@mastodon.world wasn't complying with #CloudAct, @Mer__edith would be in jail.

Not to mention even if Signal keeps their "#OpenSource" code updated - which is doubtful, NOONE can actually #verify that it's the code you actually use - regardless if #backend / #Server or #client / #App!

  • #Signal is as secure as #ANØM, otherwise it would've been shutdown ages ago.

Also if Signal was designed for #security, it would've been #decentralized as #XMPP+#OMEMO and not demand #PII like #PhoneNumbers which oftentimes cannot be obtained anonymously in many juristictions at all!

By comparison, @delta doesn't require any PII, only an #eMail account, and @monocles isn't a #VCmoneyBurningParty but sustainable due to #subscription and they don't even require any personal details for #payment: #CashByMail and #Monero are accepted.

Again: It's Signal alone who have to evidence they are trustworthy, and all I get are "#TrustMeBro!" replies, which means they are not to be trusted.

  • Not to mention, it's just not sustainable to run a #service without #revenue, even if it's run entirely by unpaid volunteers and gets all it's #hosting and #costs donated, someone has to pay for expenses due to #abuse of a service (which is an inevitability come mass adoption)...

Whereas with #XMPP I can completely setup my own server and client, even build my own if I don't trust anyone else and pay someone to audit the code.

Whereas with XMPP & PGP/MIME #eMail I can layer @torproject / #Tor over it, make it an #OnionService and keep that thing under my bed with a literal killswitch...

Having lots of fun using Delta Chat. I've set up two accounts on my mail server, one for myself and one for my husband. We're both surprised at how fast it is compared to more traditional centralised chat apps like Signal. It's so cool to be able to self-host this and not rely on centralised infrastructure that is outside of my control.

Now I just need to convince everyone I know it's really cool :)

@delta

@petergleick

If only you are holding the private keys or the seed of your wallet and if you keep it safe, no one can steal it.

Regarding the price, when #Trump came up, everything was shaked. Not just crypto. One of them, #EUR rate with respect to #USD.

I agree these #decentralized #money are not as much decentralized as they should be. But as a matter of comparing, the USD is under control of just one entity. But as for #Bitcoin, several parties share authority.

Not to mention that #cryptocurrencies are not all the same. And there is #Monero which is much more decentralized thanks to their #P2P mining pool.

We are not in a perfect world. Sometimes you haven't got a good choice. Only "bad" and "very bad" ones. In which case it's logical to choose "bad" because it's the "best" choice.

Last but not the least, cryptocurrencies are developed in the open in the general case. Where in the case of something like USD, it's up to the #US government and central bank. If you don't like a crypto and you think your idea is better, it is possible to fork it and form your own community and network. For instance #BCH is a fork of #BTC. Because some community members had the opinion BTC is going the wrong way.

Folks, when we are building spaces out here, please please please remember that people from marginalised communities who have built an income by participating in centralised social media, can't just drop everything there and start again. They will be extremely aware that every second they continue to use it, feeds the oligarch machine, but they need to feed, clothe, and house themselves. We do not all have the ability to just up and abandon established spaces.

These oligarch driven machines are extremely aware of this, and they make it difficult to leave on purpose.

Rather than saying DUMP THAT AND COME HERE OR YOU PERPETUATE FACISM, help create spaces for them that feel welcoming so they can grow new places here. This means making sure you don't fuck up early on and forget about people who aren't white nerdy blokes (I like white nerdy blokes too, but a lot of you need to pay attention!)

An example would be when Bluesky was still in invite mode, they failed BADLY to make sure racist usernames and the like could be deployed at sign up. You'd hope that disallowing slurs of ANY kind would be implemented from the get-go, but they weren't. When the Black trans community spoke up about it, it went ignored for too long, and all the while the platform contined to grow.

If you want people to come and participate in spaces where oligarchs don't reign, then make sure it's safe for everyone. There's no excuse for not doing this, you can't claim ignorance to this, and then ask people to abandon hard built spaces. You should know better.

Building new things means paying attention to things far outside our own experiences. If you don't know what to do, then hire someone who can educate you. Don't skimp on this, because it WILL bite you in the ass, as the saying goes. #decentralised #decentralized #fediverse #getfedihired

Edit:

One excellent example of feeding the machine but can't stop, is #substack. It's an Andreessen Horowitz product, and they're directly linked to funding those terrible fascists currently taking a wrecking ball to America. So many people on the left continue to use it, because they've built a platform there. I've had to check MYSELF recently because I loathe seeing it used, but it's not as easy as that unless you're wealthy and just writing for funsies.
