I updated my bio. I am still interested in machine learning, and I am continuing my own projects in this area, but this terminology has become synonymous with an ideology and culture to which I am diametrically opposed.

There is great value in tools like optical character recognition, speech recognition, and machine translation (when ethically applied). However, the current regime selling machine learning tools as products is completely disconnected from what I would view as a healthy and productive contribution to society.

I would still like to contribute to practical applications of mathematics in the world, and I hope that academia will continue to support my efforts to contribute in a way that supports everyone, not just a small cadre of plutocrats.

✂️ New Zealand scraps all support for social sciences | Science Magazine

"the country’s center-right coalition government said it would divert half of the NZ$75 million Marsden Fund, the nation’s sole funding source for fundamental science, to “research with economic benefits.” Moreover, the fund would no longer support any social sciences and humanities research, and the expert panels considering these proposals would be disbanded"

"Big batteries at home could catch fire! They are a risk!"

No: "the findings indicate that the probability of an home storage systems (HSS) fire is very low (0.0049 %) and is 50 times lower than for a general house fire."

"But solar panels catch fire quite often!"

No: "Compared to the generally low fire probability of an HSS, the probability of PV systems catching fire is a further three times lower"

Today I received the following request to review a grant application from #Swiss National #Science #Foundation :

"In this context, we would like to ask if you would be willing to support us by reviewing a recently submitted grant application. We know that this request places an additional burden on your busy schedule, but your expertise in this field would be instrumental in maintaining the highest possible standards of #research in #Switzerland. Thus we hope very much that you might agree to helping us with this task."

So, they ask me to review a pretty long (they always are) grant application by the end of December... for free, to help and support them. So, according to them, I should change my plans for the next 3 weeks, which indeed are very busy, to work for free for Switzerland. My job is to do research, and not to support the grant application from another country.

THE US is offering US$36m for researchers who can help recover ammonia and critical metals from wastewater as it looks to reduce its reliance on foreign supplies. The new funding program – called Recover – has a target to replace 50% of domestic ammonia supplies and 100% of critical metals by recovering them from wastewater sources. #reclamation #ammonia #metals #wastewater #sewage #research thechemicalengineer.com/news/u
