@ckrypto if@signalapp@mastodon.world wasn't complying with #CloudAct, @Mer__edith would be in jail.

Not to mention even if Signal keeps their "#OpenSource" code updated - which is doubtful, NOONE can actually #verify that it's the code you actually use - regardless if #backend / #Server or #client / #App!

  • #Signal is as secure as #ANØM, otherwise it would've been shutdown ages ago.

Also if Signal was designed for #security, it would've been #decentralized as #XMPP+#OMEMO and not demand #PII like #PhoneNumbers which oftentimes cannot be obtained anonymously in many juristictions at all!

By comparison, @delta doesn't require any PII, only an #eMail account, and @monocles isn't a #VCmoneyBurningParty but sustainable due to #subscription and they don't even require any personal details for #payment: #CashByMail and #Monero are accepted.

Again: It's Signal alone who have to evidence they are trustworthy, and all I get are "#TrustMeBro!" replies, which means they are not to be trusted.

  • Not to mention, it's just not sustainable to run a #service without #revenue, even if it's run entirely by unpaid volunteers and gets all it's #hosting and #costs donated, someone has to pay for expenses due to #abuse of a service (which is an inevitability come mass adoption)...

Whereas with #XMPP I can completely setup my own server and client, even build my own if I don't trust anyone else and pay someone to audit the code.

Whereas with XMPP & PGP/MIME #eMail I can layer @torproject / #Tor over it, make it an #OnionService and keep that thing under my bed with a literal killswitch...

…by altering the terms of #trade between the #UnitedStates & its largest economic partners, the #tariffs will probably rattle #SupplyChains, strain some of the country’s most important diplomatic relationships & add significant #costs for American #consumers & manufacturers.

#Canada, #Mexico & #China are the 3 largest trading partners of the US, accounting for >40% of both US imports & exports last year.

Personally if I was @Bundesregierung I'd order @AuswaertigesAmt & @bamf to basically rubberstamp any #trans and #nonbinary person to enter #Germany as I expect sooner or later a similar precedent to #ECHR decision re: #Women fleeing #Afghanistan under the #Taliban, that verifying someone to 'be a #US citizen and not cis and/or binary' should be enough to grant #asylum and #protections without any further hesitation.

  • I mean, all that #BAMF is doing by not simply doing so is wasting #PersonnelHours and creating #costs because people defending their case successfully will have the state pay the legal expenses...

#Canada PM Justin #Trudeau in his speech Saturday reached out to Americans & reminded them that these #TrumpTariffs will hurt them economically just as much as Canadians.

The tariffs will “put your #jobs at risk, potentially shutting down American #auto assembly plants & other manufacturing facilities. They will raise #costs for you, including #food at the #grocery stores & gas at the pump.” In emotional references to the nations’ shared history, he adds: “we have fought, & died, beside you.”

For many companies, though, moving a major chunk of production to the #US is unrealistic, said Agathe Demarais, a snr policy fellow at the European Council for #ForeignRelations.

#Costs are too high. American #workers are not willing to accept the low #wages that initially drove companies to move to countries like #Mexico.

Mazda & Toyota have already struggled to ramp up production at their joint US factory because of a lack of workers.

@hon1nbo @foone yeah, but all these things would essentially necessitate a fundamentally incompatible #Fork of the #USB standard, creating #costs, #fragmentation and lessen the likelyhood of success.

  • Not to mention it'll require significant investments in #UserAwareness, #Training and would still have some issues...

I gues a sort-of "Secure HID Port" that mandates proper authentification and does full #E2EE from the Keyboard Matrix / Pointing Device controller up is an option, but you'd have to expect state-sponsored attackers willing to do "Kamikaze" Hacks...

#TLDW: It requires custom silicon and a hard root of trust

Foreman said he would consider sourcing outside China if #Trump imposed a 60% #tariff on Chinese products. However, taking into account the #costs of moving factory equipment, the higher overhead to manage operations in multiple countries,& higher costs & lower #efficiency of #manufacturing outside China, it might “be a wash.”

Moving…would pose a “…waterfall of challenges … There will not be enough production capacity in Vietnam, Mexico or India for all the production…moving out of China.”

John Donigian, the senior director of #SupplyChain strategy at Moody’s, said the #tariffs could lead to higher #costs, potential #delays & pressure for #businesses to shift production closer to North America or into the #UnitedStates.

All industries would face unique challenges, he said. For #electronics, moving #production could be #slow & #costly. For #retail & #consumer #goods that try to keep costs low, inventories could fall & consumer #prices rise.

[so less stuff that’s more expensive]

Listening to the #radio at horrible O'Clock this #morning, I heard what #Stamer said. I was gobsmacked. #Rural and #Bus in the same sentence. If we only had #buses there's a good chance we'd use them! True, the #poor are hardest hit by #transport #costs, not least those #living in the #countryside. A 50% increase in capped #fare is better than nothing BUT we need to have #publictransport for #villages before we can rely on it!
