my media history class made iron gall ink yesterday, from a 1483 recipe in the UK National Archives that may have originated in (and certainly bears the stamp of) the Tower of London. #mediahistory #mediaecologies #trees #labour

I have two blenders. One is for soups and smoothies. The other is for shredding linen and cotton for paper stuff and crushing iron galls for ink. Last night I crushed iron galls and this morning I made a smoothie, using the correct blender for each. #adulting #mediahistory #bookarts
new project requires a new #introduction: I’m a settler scholar on unceded Sḵwx̱wú7mesh lands (so-called Vancouver east end.) I write about form, figuration, in-betweenness and amongstness, in the C19 Atlantic and inland waterways. Newer projects on settler uses of early C19 poetics in placemaking; and the category of the material in #mediahistory. I print stuff, #run, #bird, and am learning #changeringing as a Masorti Jew. I post about book[art]s, history, pedagogy, dogs. #litstudies #histodons

As a member of the International Advisory Board of LUCK, Lund's Centre for the History of Knowledge, I recommend applying for this postdoctoral fellowship:
Spend a week in Lund, foster new networks, discuss and enjoy. #histodons #bookhistory #MediaHistory #histknow
Almost weekend. Have you polished your song table of sixteenth century fame yet? #histodons #earlymodern #mediahistory #music
A song table (in German: #Liedertisch ) is an an etched slab of stone depicting music and set in a wooden frame. Like this one, from Bavaria: https://rism.info/rediscovered/2013/10/22/musical-tables.html
#onmydesktoday: a volume about our past and present news culture. From the early modern mediality of observation to modern intermedia news flows. Exciting news. And a timely contribution by historians to our current state of media consumerism. #histodons #NewsHistory #Mediahistory #news
Today 6 Sep 2024 I'll be joining a panel at Ars Electronica (State of the Archive: Current Approaches to Digital Archives and Archives for Digital [Art]), organised by Vanessa Hannesschläger, I’ll announce the Distributed Archive project which allows to simultaneously search the Neural and V2_ websites and archive, an outcome of the The Alex Adriaansens Residency I’ve been awarded in 2023 and join the discussion on “current approaches to digitizing, preserving and (subsequently) presenting cultural heritage” with Katharina Pektor, Sandra Sonnleitner, and Chiara Zuanni. The panel takes place at POSTCITY, First Floor, Lecture Stage, between 15:00 – 16:00.

Recalling the #PresidentialDebate between #Trump and #Biden and this gem with a toy trumpet from 1832 comes to my mind:
"Entertaining Knowledge here Trump Trump Trumpery Trump... All works not issued by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge are Illegal ..."
There is a #gun in this painting from 1664. And a pocket violin. And lots of paper, mostly #letters. And a printed #almanac. Let's have a thread, dear #histodons and friends of #earlymodern #mediahistory #bookhistory etc.
So why should you use #Schreibkalender in your research, dear #histodons and experts of #bookhistory and #mediahistory of #earlymodern Europe? Well, I did a thing for the blog of the Herzog August Bibliothek ( @hab_wf ) to address this question: https://www.hab.de/the-schreibkalender-writing-calendar-of-early-modern-german-speaking-europe/
Every app tells a different story, and connects to a different set of underpinning research. The #Hamburg app looks upon urban news flows in #earlymodern northern Europe. That's #MediaHistory, #NewsHistory, and #BookHistory flavoured with #UrbanHistory. We even wrote a chapter about this:
"Reconstructing the early modern news world. Urban space, political conflict, and local publishing in Hamburg"

WEWEWEDENME - what?
Fancy a story of a wonderfish with 2 human legs, a sword, 2 pikes, and a godly warning on the fish skin? Welcome to #earlymodern Europe's world of publishing: this fish story hit the news in 1616, just 2 years before the #ThirtyYearsWar broke out, and used an unusual warning code: WEWEWEDENME - in German: Wehe, Wehe, Wehe den Menschen. Let's start a thread about #WEWEWEDENME #histodons #bookhistory #mediahistory #history
