I think you have to look more specifically for the task or interest. Search #linux with said interest.

A lot of apps have been around forever so maybe don't get talked about much.
Like #calibre or lilypond, kicad, open scad.

I tend to just use #emacs for everything because I don't like lots of buttons and icons everywhere.
I don't use a mouse
That limits the things that solve my niches.

I use Mpd for my music player, it has so many front ends, including emacs. I even use emacs for my browser, or #nyxtbrowser or qute browser.
So I'm off in the woods with my outlier self and nobody wants to hear about that.

Any #Calibre developers around? I was testing my ePub export for the CHERIoT Programmers Guide in Calibre. Good news: It doesn't have the stupid pagination bugs that Apple Books has (Apple Books ignores the 'avoid' hint for page breaking and so breaks in the middle of floats, including in the middle of SV figures).

It does; however, completely mangle the CSS for code listings. The screenshots show the same listing in Safari, Firefox, and Calibre. One of these is not like the other ones.

The CSS and HTML are the same as this page, just ePub XHTML instead of SGML-flavoured HTML.

Right now Calibre software, with the help of a plugin, is quietly chewing thru my 217 books in a common commercial format and setting them up in EPUB format. I don't have to worry anymore that the books I BOUGHT will be deleted from my online library by a capricious billionaire in a squabble with a capricious publisher.

From now on, every ebook I buy will be downloaded and converted to epub format or I just won't buy it.

Managed to #DeDRM nearly all our #Kindle books.

I used #Calibre + the DeDRM plugin method (see the link below for more details).

Try to use the Calibre Flatpak or download the official binary from their website. The one packaged for #debian bookworm is missing a python package that is an essential dependency for the plugin.

TechYorker · How to De-DRM Kindle Books Using Calibre [2025] - TechYorkerGuide to De-DRM Kindle Books with Calibre in 2025

Starting February 26, 2025, the "Download & Transfer via USB" option will no longer be available. You can still send Kindle books to your Wi-Fi enabled devices by selecting the "Deliver or Remove from Device" option. Learn more about managing downloads
NSIntegerZac West (@zacwest@nsinteger.com)Manused: 1 pilt Amazon is removing the ability to download purchased Kindle content, which is the only way to read it on my Kobo or elsewhere. What this means is I will no longer be purchasing (“a license to”–ick) any books by the mostly independent authors who exclusively publish there; just cancelled preorders.
