Friends! I've made an effort to become platform independent and take control of my #content. I'm tired of finding out that I've wasted my time building a platform for my content only to find the platform or audience changing.

To that end, I've decided to walk the talk and reclaim #ownership on my own platform. I invite you to stop by and if you feel so inclined, let's break out those #RSS aggregators and start supporting directly!

Your AI-generated logos are making me sick, folks. The "uncanny valley" effect when I see AI-generated images makes my physically ill 🤢

(hoping to tamp it down to "detect, but not make me feel ill").

Thanks to everyone who CW's those (even better, don't post them). Also, if you're a creator/trying to sell something here, note that some of us won't buy whatever you are selling/support your cause if you're using an AI-generated logo. I feel like I'm going to be among the minority of those doing so, but anyway.

In the spring, Fodor joined other #creators in a letter to #Meta, saying it had abandoned its responsibility “to be an open & safe space for dialogue, conversation, & discussion.”

What Fodor finds particularly disempowering is that she doesn’t know when, or how, her work crosses the line.

Creators mostly have to guess, leaving them in a state of what you might call algorithmic anxiety. “It makes people more distrustful of these #SocialMedia platforms,” she says.

This is not exactly “#censorship” — anyone can still post about #politics, & people who already follow you can still see it. That’s how Taylor Swift reached her 283 million followers w/an endorsement of #KamalaHarris.

But it is a form of what #creators have long called “#shadowbanning”: reducing the reach of certain kinds of #content w/o being transparent about when it’s happening. Political campaigns, too, have been scrambling to find alternative ways to break through.

Love 'em or hate 'em, social-media influencers are an important feature of today's cultural landscape. @THR has ranked 50 of them including Amelia Dimoldenberg and Sean Evans (the chicken queen and king), Jack Schlossberg, grandson of JFK, and comedy creator Brittany Broski.

I hope this inspires other independent creators to leave toxic platforms like X and Substack behind.

"We’re much less vulnerable to platform shifts than we were before. I had long worried that Substack’s unprofitable business would eventually lead it to make decisions that were not in the best interest of our readers or our business. (Besides not removing literal 1930s Nazi content, I mean.)"

When I first got active on social media in the run up to the 2016 election, a common response from #right-wing accounts was to suggest that I was being paid by George Soros for my posts. That line was so common that posters on the left used to joke about it.

Turns out that whole thing was projection, too. Right-wing #creators were caught being paid by Russia. I hope the IRS checks whether they paid taxes on that income.
