The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recently updated its Red List of Threatened Species to include an additional 482 fungi, bringing the total to roughly 1,300 species of mushrooms, puffballs and other fungi. More than 400 of the species assessed are at risk of extinction, primarily threatened by agricultural expansion, deforestation and climate change, according to the IUCN’s latest update.

More Common Quakers (pic 1) and Clouded Drabs (pic 2), but first sighting in 2025 of an Early Thorn, one of the leaf-mimic moths. Not as bright and colourful as some of the thorn moths in the height of summer but nice to see one nonetheless (pics 3 & 4). See how the light affects its colouration. 3 & 4 are the same moth.

A small 1cm narrow arrowhead moth on a finger. It is a chestnut brown with two cream edged stigmata on each wing, one ovoid and one reniform. A cream line which rises to a hump in the middle runs towards the bottom from left wing edge to right.

A moth that resembles a butterfly with its wings held closed and upright over its abdomen grips the underside of a table. Its overall shape is scalene triangle. Its back wing edge is scalloped. The underside of the wing is showing as it holds them closed and upright. They are a mix of browns and greys with a distinct gold patch near the front.
The same aforementioned moth in straw. Its colour is more distinguishable in the light and appears to have three vertical bands down its wing. The colours blend from grey, olive and brown with a dark brown vertical stripe near the front and a distinct gold patch.

Light rain and cloud meant a few more moths (and a bumble bee!) came out to play at 'Chez Mothman' last night.

Still no real species diversity yet, but, compared to last year, #moth numbers seem encouraging. May/June/July will tell for sure.

First sighting in 2025 of the very unfairly named CLOUDED DRAB. Yes, like me, he's plain and unexciting, but undeserving of such an unflattering moniker.

Overhead shot of 1.5 centimetre narrow arrowhead shaped moth on a finger. It is a largely dull grey colour with hints of red, and specked with white. There is a wavy pale line running left to right a few millimetres from the bottom wing edge. Its head has a diamond shape mass of fine iron grey hair.

Side on you can make out the start of its chunky abdomen underneath its grey furry head with small black eyes. Its thin legs grip the finger. The background is blurred foliage.
