This is Jonathan Kennett crossing the Maramataha stream on what is now the Timber Trail in central North Island, New Zealand. There’s now a 50-metre suspension bridge. I did go back a few years later to ride the completed trail—photo tomorrow.

This is from my first trip, in Jyväskylä, and I think it tells you a lot about the country. There were more people cycling, in temperatures of —12C and below, than you’d see on a balmy summer day in most UK cities. I think right here is where I began to fall in love with Finland.
