Why haven’t we been dealing with this for the last ten years? Because we’ve been stuck in a toxic loop of fear and distraction, paralysis disguised as progress. Climate change, ecological breakdown, and runaway tech aren’t new problems — but instead of facing them, we numbed ourselves with apps, brands, and shallow performance activism. The well-meaning among us drank the #NGO poison, clinging to PR-friendly campaigns and institutional funding while losing the radical roots that once gave movements their strength. This cowardice was sold as strategy. All the while, the #geekproblem festered — where a narrow clique of techbros built tools for control, not community, and shut the rest of us out.

After 3 months that I have created an open letter trying to persuade politicians to leave X, I have just noticed a very interesting number. In 10 days, the petition that endorses the letter got more than 1500 signatures. From that day in, that is more than 80 days, there were less than 1000 new signatures. We have less than 2400 signatures at the moment: openpetition.eu/leavex

There were two people with several followers here on the Fediverse sharing the petition right after it was started, @randahl and @eloquence . I wonder if that's the reason there were so many signatures in a few days, then it faded out. Or maybe there is some network effect when it comes to online petitions.

I still believe that politics is done face to face. Unfortunately, I haven't found an organization to take over the petition, which would make it easier to gather signatures on the streets. I've talked to a few, and I'll keep trying.

@rooftopjaxx yep, in theory, but not in reality, have talked to the guy a few times over the last 5 years but not got anywhere past #NGO #fashernista that soon turns paratish. The is a signal-to-noise issue with @MediaActivist which is the same mess that has repeatedly killed grassroots movements in the past. I cover this a lot on the site hamishcampbell.com/?s=fasherni

Not sure what the useful path is, truth is not likely to help.

„The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has said it is "outraged" at the deaths of eight medics killed on duty in Rafah in southern Gaza.

The nine-person ambulance team came under heavy fire in al-Hashashin on 23 March, said the IFRC. Their bodies were retrieved on Sunday after access was denied for a week. One medic is still missing.“

The issue with #FOSS tech development

The failure of many #FOSS projects is a failure to move from theory to practice. The issue is that developers work in isolation, disconnected from grassroots needs, and get lost in perfectionism rather than delivering functional prototypes.

The #geekproblem dominates, many coders prioritize control, abstract debates, or self-contained experiments over practical, usable tools for real-world communities. This is why projects stall: they are not built with activists in mind. Meanwhile, centralized platforms continue to consolidate power, because they offer simple, accessible, and functional solutions, despite their deep flaws.

To break this cycle, we need:
* Practical iteration—build rough, working solutions rather than endless theorizing.
* #4opens culture—embrace open process, standards, and real collaboration.
* Bridging solutions—tech that activists can actually use, not just developer-driven experiments.
* Funding models beyond #NGO traps—so projects remain independent and sustainable.

The fight for the #openweb is not only about resisting #dotcons but creating alternatives people can and will use. Can we move beyond abstraction and actually make history?

The development side of #MakingHistory

Building radical alternatives is not just about ideas—it’s about infrastructure. The #makeinghistory project is grounded in the messy, often frustrating work of creating tools that actually function for real communities. We’ve spent decades watching #dotcons centralize power while open projects stumble due to lack of focus, infighting, or simply being too obscure for everyday use.

#Makinghistory means stepping outside the cycle of dead-end open-source projects that never reach real people. We need bridging solutions, funding models outside the #NGO trap, and devs who understand grassroots needs. It’s not about innovation for its own sake, it’s about making the #openweb function better as a lived alternative.

This is where the real fight is. Not in reaction, not in abstraction, but in building tools people can and will use.

The #NGO mess is hard blocking hamishcampbell.com/the-ngo-mes Some want it to be a #DIY or, as this is described by our #fashionista as a #DoOcracy, where whoever does the work makes the decisions. The more native path is parallel communities cooperating, as is outlined in the #OGB social tech project.

Composting the #TechShit

The value of the #Fediverse isn’t in the tech specs. It’s not in the #ActivityPub protocol or the code itself, those are tools. The value lies in the culture that birthed it. The #Fediverse is the living embodiment of the #openweb, not some #VC Silicon Valley plaything. But as money floods in, as #mainstreaming forces try to turn it into another hollow platform, we risk losing the very thing that makes it powerful, its strong decentralized, trust-based roots. The looming battle is […]
