Creating A GoToSocial Instance on FediHost

I was unhappy with RSS readers, so I used the power I have over my #GoToSocial instance and created a bot account, which gets the RSS feeds I want through https://mastofeed.org/.

It already has 17 followers after five hours of existence

Shows only Czech cybersecurity related feeds to keep it focused, but I think I may create another one or two accounts to have English feeds I'm interested in for different topics also - maybe even to get RSS feeds of some BlueSky artists who have them public so I don't need to go there.

Not only did the transfer of followers after the migration stop at less than half a few hours ago, but now I've lost 50 subscribers in one go and it's still going down...

I can't remember the last migration having so much effect on my nerves :RagonNo:

But let's just say it's temporary and I'm not going to have to redo my whole presence here

I wonder how much progress the #fediverse could have and grow in quality if the @EUCommission could seriously fund good non-profit projects that already make an interoperable web possible: @Mastodon , @pixelfed , @pleroma , @peertube , @gotosocial etc.

There are talks about BILLIONS of euros to rearm Europe, which seems justified to me. But it seems that no one puts on the table how to seriously address the problem of disinformation campaigns that undermine democracies. I found the EU project EU vs Disinfo https://euvsdisinfo.eu/, but they didn't dare to create at least a profile here.

Let's perpetuate the cycle of walled gardens run by cool tech bros and their profit seeking businesses. It is very comfortable.

Does this mean full #GoToSocial support? Am I missing something? Is it even related?

All this feels really empowering and I wanna help others do the same!

I think it's kinda cool how federation works, this instance was just spun up yesterday.

Some info about my #GoToSocial server setup, in case it's a useful baseline for other GTS admins or the GTS-curious:

Infrastructure

• DNS: AWS Route53 domain and sub-domain
• Server: OVH VPS VLE-4 with Alma Linux. Previously ran on an AWS EC2 t4g.small instance.

Software

• Firewalld
• Caddy (web server) -- custom Docker image with the cache-handler plugin
• PostgreSQL (DB) (Docker)
• GoToSocial (application) (Docker)

There are plenty of tutorials out there for setting up these resources, so I'm not writing up any instructions at the moment. However, if you're interested in particular configurations (Docker files, Caddyfile, firewall rules), please message me and I'll be happy to provide more details.

Setting up GoToSocial itself was actually quite easy. In contrast, getting firewalld and networking to work properly with Docker containers was a pain that I wish on no one >:-|

#introduction

I'm a tech and #Linux tinkerer, having a go at self-hosting a fediverse server. It is running #GoToSocial, which is thankfully not on a horrible Ruby on Rails stack (don't @ me!)

I'm 100% here for all the #Opera and #ClassicalMusic hot takes!
(Even though it doesn't look like the classical music crowd is very present over here?)

Also I'm currently on book 4 of #TheWheelOfTime and will unapologetically shun anyone who posts book spoilers to me. :)
