Vaccine skeptic hired to head federal study of immunizations and autism

A vaccine skeptic who has long promoted false claims about the connection between immunizations and autism has been tapped by the federal government to conduct a critical study of possible links between the two,
according to current and former federal health officials.

The Department of Health and Human Services has hired
#David #Geier to conduct the analysis, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.

Geier and his father, #Mark #Geier, have published papers claiming vaccines increase the risk of autism,
-- a theory that has been studied for decades and scientifically debunked.

David Geier was disciplined by Maryland regulators more than a decade ago for practicing medicine without a license.

He is listed as a data analyst in the HHS employee directory.

Public health and autism experts fear that choosing a researcher who has promoted false claims will produce a flawed study with far-reaching consequences.

They fear it will undermine the importance of the lifesaving inoculations
and further damage trust in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The government’s premier public health agency has stressed vaccination as the safest and most effective measure to control the spread of some contagious diseases,
including the growing measles outbreak in Texas and New Mexico.

Americans aren’t waiting for the Democratic Party to take on Trump

In February, anti-Trump demonstrations took place in all 50 states, part of the of 50501 movement (which stands for 50 protests, 50 states, one day).

On March 15, thousands of people marched in New York City under the banner of public employee unions against the Trump/Musk cuts to public services.

The arrest of pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, a green-card-holding Columbia University graduate who played a prominent role in anti-Israel protests last year, has sparked an uproar over whether the Trump administration is violating the 1st Amendment by targeting immigrants for their political beliefs.

And God bless New York Rep. #Alexandria #Ocasio-#Cortez, 35,
and Vermont Sen. #Bernie #Sanders, 83, who are on the road in Western states with their
“Fighting Oligarchy” tour, which has drawn thousands of people to arenas this week in Arizona, Nevada and Colorado.

There’s more.
“Missing member” events, for example, where voters are holding their own town halls because their Republican members of Congress are too afraid to face them.

In some cases, constituents step up to a microphone and pose questions to an empty chair.

In Wisconsin, Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden did not show up at a town hall,
so a Democrat from a nearby district,
Rep. #Mark #Pocan,
came instead and spoke to 300 people next to an empty chair with Van Orden’s name on it.

Hundreds of healthcare workers demonstrated outside the Anaheim Hills office of Republican Rep. #Young #Kim the other day to protest expected cuts to Medicaid, the health safety net for more than 72 million low-income and disabled Americans.

And millions of Americans all over the country may answer the call on Saturday, April 5, for a
“Hands Off” protest organized by Indivisible,
the progressive grassroots group that got its start in 2017 when a handful of congressional staffers put together a handbook about peaceful, effective resistance to right-wing power grabs.

The “Hands Off” motto:
“They’re dismantling our country. They’re looting our government. And they think we’ll just watch.”

#Tesla Owners Are Selling Their Cars in En masse

#Tesla has recently seen a sharp decline in sales of its cars. One of the reasons is the scandals associated with #Elon_Musk, #Bild reports

Some major companies have already refused to include #Tesla in their fleets, including the #Rossmann, #Lichtblick, and #Badenova chains. And singer #Sheryl_Crow, actress #Alyssa_Milano, and #Democratic Senator #Mark #Kelly , whom #Musk called a "traitor" for visiting #Ukraine, are selling their #Teslas

The Supreme Court on Tuesday turned away former White House chief of staff #Mark #Meadows' bid to move his state prosecution to federal court -- in the case stemming from an alleged effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.
The court's denial of Meadows' appeal leaves in place a lower court decision that returned the prosecution to state court.

Meadows and President-elect #Donald #Trump, for whom he worked, were charged alongside 17 others by Fulton County prosecutors for their alleged efforts to reverse Trump's electoral loss in Georgia in 2020.

They pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Proceedings have been on hold for months as a Georgia appeals court is set to consider in December whether to allow Fulton County District Attorney #Fani #Willis to continue prosecuting Trump and his allies.

Forget firing,
Donald Trump just pitched having special counsel Jack Smith #deported.

During a rambling radio interview on 77WABC’s Cats & Cosby Thursday,
Trump threw out Smith’s name when asked about his plans for immigration.

“Domestically, what could America look like if it continues to have this open border policy that we have seen?” asked host Rita Cosby.
“We can’t have it, it’s, it’s not sustainable, it has to be shut immediately and you have to let people in, but they have to come in legally and you have to get the killers, the murderers, and the mentally deranged, you have to get them out.
And we should throw Jack Smith out with them,” Trump said.
“The #mentally #deranged people, Jack Smith should be considered mentally deranged and he should be thrown out of the country,” Trump continued.

Trump seemed to pluck Smith’s name out of thin air, as the special counsel had not yet come up in the interview.
Smith has overseen two investigations into Trump,
one regarding his alleged efforts to overturn the election results in 2020,
and another into his alleged mishandling of classified documents.

This isn’t the first time Trump has threatened to deport those in the country legally.
The former president has repeatedly made threats to deport immigrants who have entered the country under temporary protected status and humanitarian parole.

Shortly before claiming that he would deport one of his political enemies, who is attempting to hold him accountable for his alleged crimes, Trump tried desperately to defend himself from claims that he was a fascist.

The former president went on a tirade against his former chief of staff, retired U.S. general #John #Kelly, who said that Trump fell into the “general definition of fascist.”
Trump claimed Kelly was simply angry he’d been fired.

Trump went on a wild rant calling Kelly a “stupid person,”
“a bully who made up stories,”
and “a man of rather low intelligence, who was a tough guy who became a marshmallow.”
He swerved into complaints about former Secretaries of Defense #Mark #Esper and #James #Mattis, and former Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff #Mark #Milley

This is Trump’s second threat against Smith in as many days.
Trump vowedThursday to “fire” Smith on his first day in office, in hopes of washing his hands of the two federal cases against him.

Fox News’s interview of Kamala Harris was grievance theater, not political journalism

After 10 minutes of playing immigration “#gotcha”,
Baier pivoted to the obvious next subject,
airing a video clip in which Harris expressed support for transgender people in prisons.

Immigrant hatred.

Transphobia.

And later, Joe Biden’s age.

Baier was running through the Fox News greatest hits playlist.

This was #grievance #theater, not political journalism.

❇️. But Harris got in her licks. She had her moments.

Chiming in afterwards in what some saw as 🔸corporate damage control,
Baier’s colleagues on Fox News gushed their approval.

Martha MacCallum termed Baier’s performance “masterful”, while Dana Perino analyzed the interview as “super good”.

I can’t imagine that too many viewers agreed.
If they came to it expecting to learn more about Harris’s policies or get a true sense of her character, they would have been disappointed.

That wasn’t the gameplan, and it wasn’t the result.

But Harris accomplished something anyway.

⭐️Merely by sitting down with a Fox host, she made a few statements.

✅First, that she is unafraid and is willing to speak to all voters.
It’s hard to imagine Donald Trump, these days, submitting to an interview with, say, Rachel Maddow of MSNBC;

just this week, he turned away from a CNBC interview, and earlier canceled a CBS News 60 Minutes agreement.

✅ Second, Harris did manage to introduce a few snippets of reality to dedicated Fox viewers who probably haven’t been exposed to some of the most troubling criticisms of Trump.

“That he’s unfit to serve. That he’s unstable. That’s he’s dangerous,” was how she characterized what millions of Americans are feeling.

“And that people are exhausted.”

She even was able to mention, at some length, the harsh view of the former commander-in-chief from #Mark #Milley, who served in two top military roles
– including chair of the joint chiefs of staff
– during the Trump administration.

Milley has called Trump♦️ “fascist to the core”
and has said that
💥no one has ever been as dangerous to the United States.

A team of Iranian hackers impersonated #Ginni #Thomas,
the wife of conservative Supreme Court Justice #Clarence #Thomas,
in an effort to extract information from people close to former President Donald Trump, CNN reported.

An indictment unsealed on Friday alleges that the three Iranian men gained access to the email account of a Trump campaign official this summer,
which allowed them to steal debate-preparation material and information on possible vice presidential candidates.

The practice is known as “spear phishing” among hackers.

Among the people whose accounts were compromised were #Roger #Stone, the veteran Republican dirty trickster previously pardoned by Trump before he left office.

Between April and May 2024, email was used as part of a phishing campaign that targeted, among others, a former security adviser to a former president.

Ginni Thomas was one of a number of identities fraudulently used by the hackers to target the Trump campaign.

The others have not been named but the victims detailed by the Justice Department include a series which appear closely linked to Trump,
suggesting that the use of names such as Ginni Thomas was a successful move by the Iranians.

Among those who fell for the phishing scam were a former deputy director of the CIA,
a former ambassador to Israel,
an ex-State Department adviser who appears to have advised the failed Nikki Haley campaign for president,
and a former presidential homeland security adviser.

Masoud Jalili, Seyyed Ali Aghamiri and Yasar Balaghi face charges of identity theft and wire fraud.

The indictment says they were acting on behalf of Iran’s #Islamic #Revolutionary #Guard Corps.

Although Ginni Thomas is not mentioned by name in the indictment, it says that the hackers created a fake email using the identity of a
“spouse of a sitting U.S. Supreme Court Justice.”

In addition to being the wife of a Supreme Court justice, Thomas is a conservative activist.

She made headlines for sending texts to Donald Trump’s then Chief of Staff #Mark #Meadows, on Jan. 6, 2021, urging him to overturn the election
—as Trump supporters stormed the Capitol.

One read, “Biden and the Left [are] attempting the greatest Heist of our History.”

Thomas, a conservative firebrand, claims that she does not influence her husband.

#Mark #Robinson, the Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina who described himself as a “#black #NAZI” on a porn website, also wrote a comment
-- defending Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ use of the #Nword during a drunken outburst in 2010.

The comment reads, “A drunken Irishman says n----r.
What’s next? Bears that crap in the woods?!
➡️ Get over it people.”

The Daily Beast · ‘Black NAZI’ Mark Robinson Defended Jonathan Rhys Meyers’ Drunken N-Word RantLiam Archacki poolt

Republican voters knew #Mark #Robinson was a bad man when they chose him.
Now they know he is a very bad man.
Yet North Carolina Republicans are doubling down.

Robinson has denied that the newly surfaced posts are his
— but without addressing any of the evidence showing that the postings match screen names he’s used, match his email address and match key biographical details.

⭐️To the G.O.P., the real problem was the report, not the facts.
The party issued a statement saying that “the Left can try to smear” Robinson “all they want” and “demonize him via personal attacks.”

What makes the situation all the more grievous is that Robinson is running as an outspoken evangelical.
One of his spokesmen, Mike Lonergan, has described him as “very bold and outspoken about his Christian faith.”

Both parties are vulnerable to nominating or electing the occasional crank,
but ♦️Donald Trump’s ascendance meant that a crank leads the party,
and the best way to join with him is to imitate him.

That’s how you get a Mark #Robinson, or a Marjorie Taylor #Greene, or a Lauren #Boebert, or a Matt #Gaetz.
The list goes on.

That’s how leaders change institutions.
They make them into images of themselves.

In this case, Trump has done so explicitly.
💥Almost all the worst figures in the Republican Party have ridden Trump endorsements to the top of their local pyramids.

Robinson received Trump’s endorsement and swamped his primary opposition.
Trump even called him “Martin Luther King on steroids.”

The lesson is simple:
🔸If you want more Mark Robinsons, vote for Donald Trump.

🔥It’s possible that the Republican Party is simply too far gone, at least for now.
A primary electorate that chooses Robinson over more reasonable candidates by 45 points
— and a party that blames “the left” for revealing that he’s even worse than anyone knew
— does not seem ready to change.

🆘 But unless and until the Republican Party reverses course
and purges MAGA from the party every bit as thoroughly as it has purged Reaganism,
American politics will remain unstable.

A coalition of decency
(who could ever imagine Nancy Pelosi and Dick Cheney voting for the same candidate?)
will have to continue to set aside profound differences for a larger purpose:
❇️ defending the American Republic against MAGA’s nihilistic rage.
