6:00AM: 35F, clear.
Brrrr! One of these days the mornings will be as warm as the afternoons.
Today is not that day.
Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea likely (though not certainly) reached the highest of the season on March 26 in NSIDC data. Assuming the max extent of ~672,000 km² holds, this is 24 percent below the 1991-2020 average max extent and would effectively tie with 2017 for the fourth lowest seasonal maximum since 1979 ( the satellite era). @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

We had some rain off and on late yesterday afternoon and into the evening. It's all passed now and only blue skies ahead.
"I can see clearly now, the rain has gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It's gonna be a bright, bright, sunshiney day."
Now that song is stuck in your head.
You're welcome.
Except in sea ice-influenced waters of the northern Bering Sea, for the week ending March 28, ocean surface temperature are above the 1991-2020 average almost everywhere around Alaska. Southeast Bering Sea especially warm (relative to average). @Climatologist49 @ZLabe
Cold on the North Slope Saturday morning, including low temps of -31F (-35.0C) at Umiat and -27F (-32.8C) at Deadhorse through 8am AKDT. But no, these temperatures are no where close to record lows for the date. #akwx #weather @Climatologist49 @cinderbdt
6:30AM: 42F, increasing clouds.
Looking out my window I do, indeed, see "increasing clouds." We might get rain tonight!
In other spring news: We officially turned off the furnace. There may be a chilly morning or two still, but it's been WAY to warm in the house lately. As an, ahem, "older lady," I no longer possess the ability to regulate my body temp. lol
There is a very fine line between too hot & too cold and I'm always trying to balance on it.
High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Thursday. Very mild Gulf of Alaska coast and Southeast. First 60ºF temps of the year in Alaska in southern Southeast. New record high temperatures for March 27 at Homer, Yakutat and Sitka. Continued well below normal in western and especially southwest Alaska. #akwx #weather

Welp, I don't think we'll reach the holy grail of 60 this week. Our predicted highs are too low (get it?) for that to happen.
Basically, we're having really good spring weather: quite a bit of sun with the occasional chance of showers.
I won't complain. It's the perfect weather for Sitka's gorgeous gardens to charge up for blooming. I'll be bloom scrolling my heart out soon!
Woo hoo: Klawock (Tlingit county, Prince of Wales Island) up to 60F (15.6C) early Thursday afternoon. This first 60F temperature of the year in Alaska. #akwx #Spring2025 @Climatologist49
Hot off the digital press, the brand new Alaska’s Changing Wildfire Environment 2.0 from the Alaska Fire Science Consortium at the International Arctic Research Center is now online. This updates the 2020 report and is full of updated information on many aspects of wildfire and wildfire management in Alaska. Available in a web version and a pdf. #akwx #Alaska #wildfire #Climate @anisian

Another “why winter rain is so bad in Interior Alaska”, which has become much more common in the 21st century. See this parking lot? Snow has been plowed repeatedly. This ice is entirely from the rain that fell January 24-25. A person in my building, over the weekend, slipped on the ice and broke their arm. Direct impact of rain that fell two months ago. #akwx #ClimateChange @CarrieinFbx @anisian @mivox
Record high temperature of 55F (12.8C) at Sitka airport on Wednesday, nipping the previous record of 54F set in 2019. Climate observations at the Sitka airport since late 1947. #akwx #Climate @LordsofHardwired @SilverSalmonAK
High temperatures (ºF) in and around Alaska on Wednesday. Mildest day so far this year in many places in Southcentral and Southeast, including a new daily record high temperature at Sitka. Bering and Chukchi Sea coasts still colder than normal but slight moderation in many communities. #akwx #weather

Lots of sun in the forecast, a chance of rain on Saturday. Definitely a chance for the temp to at least get into the high 50's.
Juneau is under a high wind warning. Once again (for more reasons than this) I'm glad I don't live in Juneau. ;)
Side note: to really geek out, I read the Forecast Discussion on the NWS site. Lots of in-depth info and insight into the thinking behind the forecast.
4:00PM: 54F, sunny.
DING, DING, DING!
We've popped over 50, folks. I obviously aimed too low. Maybe we'll top 60 this week????
Not that I'm rubbing it in or anything @LordsofHardwired
The temperature at the Fairbanks, Alaska airport failed to reach -40F/C this past winter. This used to be a rare occurrence, but has now happened four times in the past decade. The typical number of -40F/C days per winter has dropped dramatically in the past 96 years. #akwx #ClimateChange @anisian @mivox @debmcqueen @CarrieinFbx
