Amelanchier x grandiflora, downy serviceberry, has beautiful pink to white flowers and downy sage colored stems. It's a lovely, unusual looking small street tree which has a showy display of vivid colors in fall.

This photo is of a portion of an old, gnarled, moss covered apple tree has clumps pf various lichen growing on its branches, The emergent flower and leaf buds are barely visible. A couple of licorice fern fronds can be seen toward the bottom.

We found one pale pink salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis) bush in bloom, promising insipid fruit in fall. Although the birds love them. No accounting for taste.

A backlit pale pink five petaled flower hangs at the top of an almost leafless branch in the dappled light of the woods' understory . Its green sepals curve outwards a bit. Inside you can see its anthers still bent over the nascent berry.

A tall tree stump in front of a house has a large face carved into it. The bark is very rough and the carving uses the bark and grain to help emphasize the emotion. The eyes are below furrowed brows, and look angonized. The cheeks bones are prominent, the nose slightly mashed with a long flowing mustache, and the mouth wide open, either screaming or yelling. You get to guess what is happening inside the wooden head!
There are various shrubs and greenery surrounding the carving. Maybe it is the Green Man.

On the other side of the house is an equally large tree stump with no carvings. It is dotted with an array of clumps of moss and shelf mushrooms. It, too, is surrounded by greenery. Although there is no carving visible from the street, maybe there is one on the back?

I think silk tassel bush (Garrya elliptica) is hard to photograph because at least this year the catkins are so plentiful they look more like grayish strings tossed on the shrubs. However, a close up of the male plant's catkins shows a profusion of anthers entangled with each other on a long chain of gray to pink flowers.

Silk tassel bush catkins look like the flowers are growing out of the top flowers in long chains, but they are growing on the sides of a felty gray stem. The flowers look like little gray and pink bells hanging from the bells above them, full of anthers ready to release pollen into the crisp drizzly spring air. The long catkins sprout from the branches in small dense clusters that look like, surprise, long tassels! There are leaves around these flowers, round and evergreen with edges curling under.

Spring is creeping up on us. First I spotted the beginnings of osoberry flower buds then I spotted one that actually started to bloom in its tiny microclimate (Species: Oemleria cerasiformis. Probably male plant.)

Osoberry blooming stems start to extend on bare branches. They look like green feather dusters with a touch of red. Later the blooms will open, looking like little white comets in the understory

A red little free library box is full of blue paperback Bibles. The books are actually quite nice. You can see a ramp up to the church and a corner of the brick building behind.

Walking on aged concrete sidewalks in the area, I keep seeing these whitish splotches. I noticed after the snow, when wet, the splotches had relief to them. Lichens! Patches of small, pale green lichens. Peltula spp? ID help?

Very small roundish pale green lichens less than a quarter cm wide grow on aggregate concrete sidewalks. They look like tiny sacks with an opening on top. Some of the openings have a brownish coloration, which are probably apothecia.

Hairy curtain crust mushroom (Stereum hirsutum) sometimes called false turkey tail is a small mushroom with colorful caps, no stipe and a smooth poreless undercap. Here I have a photo of a clump of wet caps showing the color striation, and a photo of one just growing out of the dead branch, showing its coarse hairs.

Hairy curtain crust mushrooms are growing on a dead branch on the ground. The wavy, rain-soaked caps have color striations ranging from deep red at the center, to dark brown to golden brown, with a creamy rim. The caps look a bit like fans.

A bright green patch of fire moss is full of sporangia in different stages of maturity. The immature sporangia have translucent green capsules. The other, older ones are varying shades of red. There is a wooden fence behind the mossy rock.

Blue green fruticose lichen grow up along the face of a fence. The lichen has stem-like structures that look as if they are covered with powdery scales. A couple are topped with bright red apothecia.

The native broadleaf stonecrop (Sedum spathulifolium) makes colorful masses among the rocks in local gardens as well as on the rocky coast of the PNW

The stonecrop's rosettes of colorful leaves make a nice counterpoint to the quartzite with its black, white, gray and pink grains. The leaves are blue green with tinges of rose on the edges and look as if baby powder was scattered over them

A sad anecdote in our community garden news: yesterday volunteers were going to turn over the compost. They couldn't even get a pitchfork into the frozen masses in the bins! The soil is frozen too, so turning anything over is doomed. BUT...if the compost was fermenting, should it have frozen? I know the piles haven't been turned since I started my gardens there, so that's 18 months, way too long.

A couple of yellowed strawberry leaves amid the brown ones are rimmed with frost. I didn't take photos of the green leaves which ae still alive, apparently.
