"Als seine gesamte Familie infolge der Zwangsräumungsbefehle der israelischen Armee vertrieben wurde, blieb er trotz des Wissens um bereits getötete Kolleg:innen im Norden des Gazastreifens, um von dort aus über die völlig entgrenzte Kriegsführung der Regierung Netanjahu und später die ethnische Säuberung Nord-Gazas zu berichten. Seine Mutter sah er erst nach 492 Tagen wieder, nach Inkrafttreten der Waffenruhe. Am 6. Oktober 2024 sagte er in einem Tweet in Gedenken an seine von der israelischen Armee getöteten Freunde Ismail Al-Ghoul und Hassan Hamad, beide ebenfalls Journalisten: „Ich verspreche euch, dass ich die Fackel weitertragen werde. Ruhet in Frieden, meine geliebten Ismail und Hassan.“ Die Menschen in Gaza liebten ihn, weil er mit diesem Entschluss und mit seiner Arbeit Hoffnung ausstrahlte. Hoffnung auf Gerechtigkeit, Hoffnung auf ein Einschreiten der Welt angesichts schwerster Verbrechen in der Enklave. Eine Hoffnung, die sich bis zu seinem Tod nicht erfüllte....."

Each day was a battle for survival. I endured hunger for months, yet I never left my people’s side. By God, I fulfilled my duty as a journalist. I risked everything to report the truth, and now, I am finally at rest—something I haven’t known in the past 18 months . I did all this because I believe in the Palestinian cause. I believe this land is ours, and it has been the highest honor of my life to die defending it and serving its people. I ask you now: do not stop speaking about Gaza. Do not let the world look away. “Today, March 24, 2025, Israel killed journalist Hossam Shabat, a reporter for Al Jazeera Mubasher and a contributing reporter to Drop Site News, in what witnesses described as a targeted strike. Hossam was a tremendous young journalist who exhibited remarkable courage and tenacity as he documented the U.S.-facilitated genocide against the Palestinians of Gaza. One of the few journalists who didn’t leave the northern Gaza Strip, Hossam was murdered in Beit Lahia, the site of some of the most intense Israeli bombing and mass killing operations.
