The second court day in Peruvian farmer Saúl versus German coal major RWE.

3 hours ago, so at 6pm, the session was closed. Decision will be announced on April 14.

I don't know how such a long thread displays if you're not logged in. So I chose to link to a posting near the end of a thread. Hope it's working out alright.

Bluesky Social · 🌍⚖️ Sébastien Duyck (@duycks.bsky.social)54/ We are now turning to RWE's closing statement. "This is a litigation for the public" 🤔a curious argument for a defendant that was reminded BY THE PRESIDING JUDGE to stop fearmongering & bad faith in its public discourse in relation to the ongoing trial.

Important court day. A farmer from Peru is suing German coal major RWE for contributing to climate change which is bound to cause a rockslide into the glacial lake uphill from the farner's honetown.. and drown them all... unless an expensive protection dam is built. The cost of which RWE shall have to pay.
The verdict by the first instance court in 2017 denied the argument.
Today's court, Oberlandesgericht Hamm, starts from scratch. The judges even did an onsite visit in 2022 as preparation.
And they appointed a court expert on specific climate attribution, too...who, it turns out, is on the side of RWE... See the second to last post in below thread...

Here's a live ticker from the court room. This is the last post in the thread:

Next court day is Wednesday.

Bluesky Social · 🌍⚖️ Sébastien Duyck (@duycks.bsky.social)30/ 👋 And it's a wrap for today! Judge Meyer suspends the hearing - the expert's cross-examination will continue on Wed. 🔎 I will share shortly on this platform a brief recap of today's highlights: while today's hearing was quite technical, some key lessons can already be drawn.

As a middle-aged man I try to look after myself by running, cycling, stretching and touching my toes in the morning, doing climate activism, eating fresh veg, going to bed at a regular time, speaking to friends regularly, demonstrating with friends against the fossil fuel industry, meditatiing occasionally, intellectual stimulation, educating myself about #ClimateJustice, listening to birdsong, journalling, having conversations about ecology and trying to keep a #ClimateDiary.

Let's talk about #Degrowth...

Imagine an economy designed to serve the planet and ALL its inhabitants, not just the most powerful. What might that look like?

Countries that have overshot ecological limits would scale back their non-essential production and consumption to lessen environmental impacts and to decarbonise more rapidly by:

❇️ Reducing reliance on cheap fossil energy
❇️ Reducing the use of material-intensive luxuries like SUVs, private jets, and oversized homes
❇️ Stopping unsustainable practices such as the industrial production of meat and the culture of fast fashion
❇️ Curbing the wealth excesses of the very rich
❇️ Promoting public transportation over private vehicle use
❇️ Fostering a culture of durability and reparability in consumer goods

Simultaneously, the focus would shift toward enhancing social progress and human well-being by:

🔷 Guaranteeing universal access to high-quality essential public services like healthcare, education, childcare, and transportation
🔷 Ensuring affordable housing and living wages for all
🔷 Implementing a public job guarantee; a nationally-funded program where the municipal government provides jobs to those willing and able to work

Embracing these changes does *not* mean rejecting technology. A balanced approach where technological innovation and efficiency improvements are pursued as long as they are sustainable, safe, and equitable should be encouraged. The focus is on using resources efficiently, distributing them fairly, and scaling down non-essential production to help societies achieve self-sufficiency and justice.

One day, I was supervising a chemistry lab with a grade 9 class, and one of my students was walking along with a test-tube rack, fully loaded. One of the test tubes wasn’t quite nestled in properly – it slipped out, and broke on the floor, spilling the contents.

The student expressed his frustration by giving the test tube rack a sharp up and down jerk, which ended up dropping most of the rest of the test tubes on the floor. A small mess was turned into a significantly bigger one, and put the student that much farther behind because he had to re-prepare more solutions.

Unfortunate, and avoidable.

There are a bunch of messes in progress. The climate catastrophe, COVID, war… We are *not* going to make it better by giving society a shake and electing right-wing politicians. We’re just going to get a bigger mess.

It’s a natural instinct, when things are going to shit, to close in and protect your own. But that just continues the cycle of shit, as we circle the drain. It’s a downward spiral (figuratively, so I can get off the poop metaphors 😄).

Resist that urge. When things are bad, help others. Stop doing the bad things.

Insist that leaders manage the country for *everyone*, not just a privileged few.

Killing innocents is a bad thing, usually a war crime, no matter who does it. Don't tolerate that shit from *anybody*. Don't tolerate leaders that tolerate it.

Don't vote for anyone who uses “Take back ______" as a slogan. People interested in taking will take from you, too.

We can have a just society. But we have to work for it, avoid the easy negative reactions, and force those with power and those who would seek power to work for the better, not for themselves.

Let’s get personal, shall we? I’ve been here a while now, and as I’m feeling quite comfortable at Mastodon, I’d like to share a bit more about myself beyond my passion for the climate and the environment.

To begin with, I’m a male, he/him, hetero, strongly supporting LGBTQ rights. I’m a baby boomer, born at 312 PPM 🌏, a United Statesian, although I lived in Europe (mostly Hungary) for several years, and traveled extensively for work before retiring in 2012. I’ve never been good at sustaining long-term romantic relationships, and I’ve finally settled into comfortable singlehood.

I like to say I’m made of contrasts.

For example, I’m rather funny and quite personable, but I don’t enjoy small talk and I hate parties. I currently live in the Bible Belt, but I’m an outspoken atheist. While I can easily fit into most social situations, I don’t feel comfortable around large groups and prefer being alone most of the time. I live near two huge military bases, but I detest the USA’s militaristic, troop-worshiping culture. I’m almost always cheerful, which masks my deeply felt existential nihilism. I’m a neat freak, but also rather lazy, preferring fun over work.

I’ll finish up with some hashtags to add flavor...
