A large yellow butterfly with black accents and a classic swallowtail is perched on a lantana bush with its tongue extended to sip from a yellow lantana floret. All around are other yellow & orange lantana flowers. Only if you look will you notice that some of the ragged edges of the large beautiful wings are age & wear rather than the natural border. This is a swallowtail butterfly at Arena Blanca, Peru, but I don't know the species, the Americas host many swallowtails.... Photo by Peachfront. Nov 2024.

A brilliant blue hummingbird with a small white slice of nape sits on a bare snag. The dark shadow behind the bird makes the background look black, causing the brilliant blue head and shimmering greeny-blue body to stand out. This is the White-necked Jacobin. While this is the standard adult male form, about 10% of the birds in this plumage are now known to be females while 90% of females have a different plumage. In a green garden appear several stalks with blooming purple verbena flowers. A perky hummingbird sits on the curve of a stalk that lacks flowers so that he can turn to sip from the stalk that does boast flowers. He's hard to see because he's green and tiny but suddenly you spot a long blue tail cocked up like a wren. Zooming in on the photo will also reveal the skimpy wires of the bird's erect crest. A swallowtail butterfly species from northern Peru, now you know as much as I do, apparently there are hundreds of swallowtail species, anybody know more? tell me!!!

On a sunny day, a very large yellow and black swallowtail with, yep, two "tails" on its lower wings is feeding on a lantana flower. In the background is the blurred green and pink of more flowers. I saw other large swallowtails at Huembo and Arena Blanca but who knows if they're the same species, could be... :shrug:
