It is greatly appreciated. :-) :-) Midnight Monsters: A Startled Moontinkifer Do not be afraid. Like many night creatures, they just wish to be left alone. These secretive beings often hide in the shadows, except when the moon is full and bright. The midnight moon is their time of wonder and if you happen to be in the right place at the right time, you just may witness some magical happenings. This particular midnight monster is called Moontinkifer and can be found high up in the Balkan mountain range on the border between Bulgaria and eastern Serbia . It was not easy getting to this destination, but I have found it worth the effort, expense and skinned knees. Legend says that if one is lucky enough to spot them during the day, they appear as drab, colorless creatures, almost invisible against the mountain landscape of rocks and boulders. They shine (literally) at night when they come out of their hiding places to dance. Moonlight causes a shimmering transformation from dull gray to a luminous rainbow colored glow! It is believed that the glimmer of incandescent color and magical movements is their way of attracting a mate. Otherwise, they appear to be quite shy, non-aggressive individuals, who unfortunately, startle easily. Phil StookeCraters at the Lunokhod 1 site were named after men associated with the mission, first names in diminutive form. They were not used at the time of the mission but were put on a modern map and accepted by the IAU. These Lunokhod 2 names are women, probably people connected with the mission - a few are obvious to anyone who knows the people. They were proposed to the IAU quite a few years ago but nothing happened. Male bias? Phil StookeZooming in on Luna 21, here it is with tracks visible in the last image. There are a few feature names here - all of them unofficial except the name of the crater, Le Monnier. The Soviets did not name craters and other features at their sites until this mission, where a few names were given at the time, including 'Straight Rille', a linear valley. Crater names came only recently, all diminutives of womens' names. That happened yesterday over some northern parts of planet Earth as a partial solar eclipse occurred shortly after sunrise. Regions that experienced the Moon blocking part of the Sun included northeastern parts of North America and northwestern parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. The featured image was captured yesterday over the Grábrók volcanic crater in Iceland where much of the Sun became momentarily hidden behind the Moon. The image was taken through a cloudy sky but so well planned that the photographer's friend appeared to be pulling the Sun out from behind the Moon. No part of the Earth experienced a total solar eclipse this time. In the distant past, some of humanity was so surprised when an eclipse occurred that ongoing battles suddenly stopped. Phil StookeI am still pondering Luna 20's images but for now we will look at the next Soviet mission to land on the Moon, Luna 21. It flew only a few weeks after Apollo 17 ended NASA's lunar exploration program, and for a few years the Soviet Union had the Moon to itself. Phil StookeHere is a circular version of the same synthetic panorama. The lighting is not the same, which doesn't help. The view is from some elevation, it doesn't go all the way to the surface. This cuts off enough of the lander foreground that the 'northern crater' seen well in the panorama is lost in the blank middle bit. I have not yet learned how to avoid that happening. The rim of Ameghino is not as obvious as I expected. Well, here is the result and it doesn't help much at all. The panorama is the top image, and a 4x vertical stretch is the bottom image. Maybe it’s just me alone with my thoughts—or, well, with you. I received my CPAP machine yesterday and tried it for the first time last night. It has a mask that covers my nose, which will take some getting used to. I ended up taking the mask off around one this morning—baby steps. Maybe this buzzing in my head is the extra energy the doctor said I might feel. During the night, there were moments when the machine’s air pressure seemed to puff up my mouth, forcing me to open it to release the air. It’s such a strange feeling.
