Doug Bostrom<p>"Resource exchange is a fundamental mode of cooperation in biological systems [1]. When multiple actors engage in the exchange of resources, they form transportation networks [2]. The emergence of these networks brings profound changes for its members, who are now exposed to the success or failure of other actors. The collective impacts of these interactions rippling through the network create their own emergent properties."</p><p><a href="https://scicomm.xyz/tags/ants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ants</span></a> <br><a href="https://scicomm.xyz/tags/hymenoptera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hymenoptera</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://sauropods.win/@futurebird" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>futurebird</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/full/10.1098/rspb.2024.2342?af=R" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">royalsocietypublishing.org/doi</span><span class="invisible">/full/10.1098/rspb.2024.2342?af=R</span></a></p>

Steve's Place<p>Despite moving the coffee maker (twice), I've dealt with at least a dozen more ants. Some were left were the coffee maker spent the night. Some appeared after brewing a cup. They literally build colonies inside of coffee makers.</p><p>I haven't the patience for tiny coffee addicts.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.stevesworld.co/tags/ants" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ants</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.stevesworld.co/tags/coffee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>coffee</span></a></p>
Steve's Place<p>When I clean my kitchen, there is no food for ants. &lt;--&lt; A fallacy.</p><p>I relocated a few dozen ants away from my coffee maker, cleaned it as best I could, and moved it out of the kitchen into a hallway. If no more ants appear, it's going somewhere that is not in the kitchen.</p><p>These ants are addicted to caffeine. When fully caffeinated, they're zombified for a bit. Makes clean-up a breeze!</p><p>Well, it did before dozens of the relatives showed up.</p><p>I was singing a dirge-like tune to express my sorrow that ants are no longer enjoying sips of freshly-brewed French Roast.</p><p>They eat my food, they drink my coffee, but do they ever leave a tip? Heck, no.
