Jocelyn<p>/2.5 *DYK since the late 2010s when greyhound pulled out of Canada, there’s no more <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/WheelchairAccessible" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WheelchairAccessible</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/transportation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transportation</span></a> between Vancouver and Whistler BC? My work does an <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/AdaptiveRecreation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AdaptiveRecreation</span></a> camp in Whistler every year with one of the only organizations offering <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/aMTB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>aMTB</span></a> guided rides in the province, and the one barrier we struggle the most with is finding transportation for participants who need it. Don’t even get me started on the cost of <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/AccessibleVehicles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AccessibleVehicles</span></a> these days.</p>
Jocelyn<p>2/ we want the innovation in <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/aMTB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>aMTB</span></a> to be rewarded. Unlike mainstream <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/mtb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mtb</span></a> there are no rentals for us, and very few guided rides, generally in hard to reach places*. With a majority low income pop’n, huge barriers to personal transportation to where guided rides are available, it just feels... wrong. Exclusive. Non disabled folks can also run, hike, walk trails... for many <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/disabled" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>disabled</span></a> folks these bikes are <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/mobilityaids" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mobilityaids</span></a>, the only way to independently <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/accessrecreation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessrecreation</span></a> &amp; <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> beyond the asphalt.</p>
Jocelyn<p>My dudes, adapted mountain biking <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/aMTB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>aMTB</span></a> is the thing I never thought was possible &amp; made enjoying <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/OutdoorRecreation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OutdoorRecreation</span></a> possible for me. The way the tech is advancing is mind boggling, but it kills me how high the barriers to entry are. Entry level bikes like mine start at CAD$7k &amp; most sophisticated (the current standard for downhill competition) is the Bowhead RX, CAD$19,000. W/ target population w/a majority living near poverty line? /1 (pics from <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/crankworx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>crankworx</span></a>) <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/mtb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mtb</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/recreation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>recreation</span></a></p>
