Ganga<p>I am adoring reading this book ⬆️ ( <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/TheCookingOfTheEasternMediterranean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheCookingOfTheEasternMediterranean</span></a> by <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/PaulaWolfert" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PaulaWolfert</span></a> ).</p><p>I got half way through the book before there was a section that contained meat. (There were a few "chicken stock" recipes before that but mostly the non-veg components were easily substituted.)</p><p>Her description of the recipes, how she found them, who showed her, where they cooked the dish, the drive there..... All fascinating and make the book very readable.</p><p>I am up to a section on the use of chickpeas! And how she waxes lyrical about chickpeas ❤️ </p><p>*Pops into kitchen to put chickpeas on to soak*</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/FromTheKitchen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FromTheKitchen</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Cookbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cookbooks</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/food" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>food</span></a></p>
Ganga<p>Cookbook browsing today ....</p><p>I am back to this book</p><p>The Cooking of the Eastern Mediterranean: 215 Healthy, Vibrant, and Inspired Recipes, by Paula Wolfert </p><p>I have had this book for some years, and even cooked from it, but I have recently realised how wonderfully full of titbits of information it is. So a good read is deserved. Ganga<p>Cookbook browsing today....</p><p>The Greek Vegetarian, by <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/DianeKochilas" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DianeKochilas</span></a> </p><p>I have mentioned this one before. It's a fabulous book, and love it even more as it has some purslane recipes.</p><p>And this mornings browse had me searching for a Greek recipe of slow cooked (oven) eggplant and chickpeas in a clay pot. She mentioned this in this book, and I found a recipe in <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/PaulaWolfert" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PaulaWolfert</span></a>'s The Cooking of the Eastern Mediterranean. I might try it after the Extreme Heat Wave this week. Ganga<p>Dal Makhani was my very first Indian recipe, given to me in India, and a recipe that began a great journey into Indian food. I was in Bangalore for work, I ordered Dal Makhani from the room service menu at the Oberoi, nearly collapsed with the deliciousness of it, and rang the kitchen for the recipe.</p><p>Graciously, they gave me the recipe, and altho over time I received several more Dal Makhani recipes from great sources, this one is still my favourite.</p><p>The key to Dal Makhani (imo) is long, slow cooking until the lentils and beans are collapsing into the sauce. So imagine my surprise when I was looking up a recipe in <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/CompleteRegionalIndianCookingCookbook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CompleteRegionalIndianCookingCookbook</span></a> by <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/MridulaBaljekar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MridulaBaljekar</span></a> to see her *briefly cooked* (30 mins) Dal Makhani recipe with whole lentils and (tinned kidney) beans sitting up proudly in a base of tomato-butter-cream sauce.</p><p>I want to say <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/NotMyDalMakhani" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NotMyDalMakhani</span></a> 🤣 I still prefer the original recipe from Bangalore. It was the most stolen/copied recipe from my blog in those early years (late 1990's) and thus it is probably still in the internet ether if you went looking (complete with all the mistakes a first-time Indian food cook would make).</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/IndianFood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IndianFood</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Food" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Food</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Cookbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cookbooks</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Vegetarian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Vegetarian</span></a></p>
Ganga<p>Cookbook browsing today....</p><p>The Great Australian Baking Book: All the Favourites We Know and Love from Eighty of Our Finest Bakers, by Helen Greenwood</p><p>If you bake, this is such a gorgeous book. All the comfort of Australian loved baked goods. I put this in the Rural Australian food genre. So few people in our cities bake regularly any more and cafes only stock the bog standard set of pastries.</p><p>The book is not as old fashioned as the cover might indicate - there are some great modern touches in there. Ganga<p>Cookbook browsing today....</p><p>Simple Ways to Success Indian by Das Sreedharan</p><p>A nice little book with easy but good recipes. Ganga<p>Cookbook browsing today.... Part 1</p><p>Being a Lazy Day, I am browsing 2 cookbooks today.</p><p>The first one I got down from the shelves this morning because of a convo I had yesterday after I posted about the green almonds. I wanted to check some things. It is a book of Lebanese preserves.</p><p>🌟 <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Mouneh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mouneh</span></a>, by Barbara Abdeni Massaad</p><p>This is the most beautiful of books, large, glossy, beautiful photos, full of stories of life in Lebanon, and full of recipes. I adore it, and it is beautiful to browse today and read more of the stories. They include personal stories of past strifes in Lebanon and how it impacted family life. There will be quality time spent with this book today.</p><p>You can tell I adore this book. They have another, <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Manoushe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Manoushe</span></a>, also excellent, but not quite as stunning as this book.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/CookbookBrowsing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CookbookBrowsing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Cookbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cookbooks</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/LebaneseFood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LebaneseFood</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Vegetarian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Vegetarian</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Preserving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Preserving</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/food" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>food</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/BarbaraMassaad" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BarbaraMassaad</span></a></p>

Ganga<p>Cookbook browsing ....</p><p>I once read that a very senior editor in a top publishing house considers it good going – a downright success, even – if the consumer cooks two recipes from a cookbook they buy. Two! </p><p>(Margaret Fulton's daughter writes about cookbooks: <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/food/2022/nov/05/whats-the-point-of-cookbooks-hope-love-and-beauty-but-not-cooking" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theguardian.com/food/2022/nov/</span><span class="invisible">05/whats-the-point-of-cookbooks-hope-love-and-beauty-but-not-cooking</span></a>).</p><p>I have a determination to not let that happen. I love cookbooks. And I want them to be an active part of my everyday-ness. I love to browse them, just like I might a photograph album. And read them, just like I might a novel.</p><p>In sharing my browsings, I hope you too will occasionally get a cookbook down off a shelf. Or from your eReader. Flick through it. Maybe read a recipe or two. Be inspired by them.</p><p>But remember, recipes are not reality (like a photo, really). They reflect the author's intent, and that is not always to have you cooking easy, healthy and delicious meals for yourself and your family. Plus, and its a big plus, it is a competitive world, and everyone wants to put out a cookbook. Choose wisely.</p><p>So, push and prod those recipes into something that uses what you have or are prepared to purchase, without moving too far away from intent and flavour profiles (unless you are comfortable doing so ).</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/cookbookBrowsing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cookbookBrowsing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/cookbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>cookbooks</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Food" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Food</span></a></p>

I can't even recall how I came across this book - maybe when I bought my 2 pieces of their cookware - that must have been in the '90's. Great veg and salad recipes, and OH, the desserts, jams, and preserves (many involving alcohol!).</p><p>Viva la France.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Cookbookbrowsing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cookbookbrowsing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Food" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Food</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/Cookbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Cookbooks</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.au/tags/FrenchFood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrenchFood</span></a></p>
